The Monsanto Menance, a 2013 article in the Village Voice, chronicles how the introduction of GMO crops in the 1990s and Monsanto's purchase of rival seed companies have led to soaring seed prices and increased pesticide costs. Then Monsanto embarked on a campaign of suing farmers who saved seed to replant the following year. The article analyzes Monsanto's political campaign contributions, its influence at all levels of government, and the lack of study of GMO crops' health and environmental hazards.

The Village Voice goes on to note evidence that GMO crops cost more, have not significantly increased yields, and have required soaring use of pesticides as weeds and insects become resistant to the GMO crops and pesticides. Ongoing degradation of the soil, pollution of water, and contamination of foods have been the consequences.

The article describes the catastrophic die-off of bees, the banning and labeling of GMOs in Europe and other parts of the world, and the growing movement to label GMOs in the USA, despite the deceptive publicity used to defeat a labeling requirement in California. Read the full article here.
